Geese

On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman is one of my favorite books to read to Avi. Honestly the first time I read it Avi wasn't but a few months old and the first page brought me to tears.
"On the night you were born,
the moon shone with such wonder
that the stars peeked in to see you
and the night wind whispered,
'Life will never be the same.'
Because there had never been
anyone like you...
ever in the world."

It sometimes still does. (There are a handful of other books that do the same). One of my favorite lines is:

So whenever you doubt just how special you are
and you wonder who loves you, how much and how far,
listen for the geese honking high in the sky.
(They're singing a song to remember you by.)

Because of this line, I make a huge deal about geese to Avi. Every time we see or hear geese, I do what I can so that Avi can see them and remind him that they are singing a song to remember him by. I've even broken our strict rule about no t.v. or video for Avi until he is much older and allowed him to watch this (short) beautiful clip of geese from the film Winged Migration. It too can make me teary.

So you can imagine how wonderful it was when we arrived at the park to see and hear the geese flying from the lake to the grass in groups of about 20. Avi and I left the playground and headed for the geese.

His cousins and Aunnie (his Aunt) soon followed.

"Geese Geese"

Gage joins Avi to get a closer look.

A magical moment as the geese taking flight.

  1. I love this book! My sister gave it to me when I had my first born. We've read it many, many times.

These photos are wonderful. What a magical moment, indeed. :)

    1. Amanda,
Thanks. There are so many wonderful books... but when we find one that truly touches us... and can tug at our heart strings again and again... one word: yes!

  2. We love all of Nancy Tillman's books, so beautiful and meaningful.

And geese, we love them too. Summer's here just wouldn't be the same without them. We have quite a lot hanging out this winter, no need to go south I guess, with our warm winter :)

    Great pictures.

    1. Kim,
yes... I'm falling in love with all of them... and crying at the stores when I read them. She has a way. And the geese... they are "yours" after all.... Canadian! :)
