(this moment)

A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. If you're inspired to do the same, leave a link to your 'moment' in the comments for all to find and see.

All in an afternoon....

Avi got a strider pre-bike from his Grandma and Grandpa for Hanukkah.
We finally opened it and took it for a short spin. Avi likes to say "bike"!
Helmet, check!  And off we go!

I got this thing!

But he still loves this wagon.  He loves to push it and... be pushed in it!
We went to a neighbor's sloping driveway so he could "drive" down it.
Wheeeeeeee

"More"

I got sidetracked by his curls....

...and the way the sun shines off his eyelashes.

Then it's to the park that is within spitting distance from our house.  We are so fortunate!
On our way, we see these two deer.

Then we meet Ringo, the neighborhood llama out for his walk.

At last at the swings... Avi swings high... high up to the moon.

and Mama comes home early and finds us at the park!

Watching the two of them play chase... I love it!

4:15, our sun sinks below the mountains. So we head in...

....and snuggle up with some favorite books.

snow, eggs, sunshine (in that order)

Snow:
A few shots for Grandma...

Not enough for a snowman, but Jenn did give Avi the lowdown on snowball fights.

 A serious contender.

If these mittens fit, it might be easier.

Eggs:
The other morning I let the girls out and looked in their boxes for eggs... nothing. A few hours later I went to check again and....

 Not one, but three eggs!

With a 1/2 dozen, I made two quiches!
One was a gift and the other got eaten before I could take a photo!

Sunshine:
Winters in Colorado are divine!  A little snow on one day and then sunshine and 60s the next.

 Just one scoop...

 and some careful maneuvering...

 out of the sandbox...

... to share his sand with the hens. Too cute!

the little things...

Trash. One thing I hate dealing with is the trash and recycle. I think it stems way back to when I was 11 or 12 and my mom had asked me to take the trash out. The sun had set hours before and our back porch light wasn't bright enough to light the alley where the trash cans were. I balked at my mom asking why one of my brothers couldn't do it. It was, after all, their job. "Just do it", she said sternly. So I tied up the plastic overflowing trash bag best I could and headed out the back door. The damp grass was cold on my bare feet. As I neared the alley my pace quickened. I wasn't afraid of the dark, I just hated fighting with my imagination having to tell myself, it's just a shadow. As I swung my arm to get the momentum needed to chuck the bag into the aluminum can, my foot stepped down but it wasn't cold damp grass. It was hot fresh dog shit... squishing between my toes. After cleaning my foot off best I could in the grass and making my way back to the house, I opened the sliding glass door, looked at my mom, "I stepped in dog shit".  She laughed of course and laughed again when she greeted me the next morning only to hear me respond, "I can't believe I stepped in dog shit". She still laughs about it some 25 years later.  But I regress.

As I was saying, I hate dealing with the trash and recycle. I am blessed that Jenn takes care of both. Always! I can let the trash pile higher and higher knowing that she will deal with it. And I'm so grateful. This past Sunday as I was driving home from the grocery store, I see some of the neighbors have dragged their cans to the curb for tomorrow's trash pick up.  I think to remind Jenn that it's trash day tomorrow and would she please get the cans to the curb before bed tonight... and don't forget the office trash can, it's not been emptied in a while and the upstairs bathrooms. As I park the car, I suddenly I decide to do it myself. I drag the cans to the curb and come inside and gather all the trash and recycling, including the office and the upstairs bathrooms and carry it to the curb.... and what do I see, but the most amazing moon rise.  If I hadn't taken out the trash myself, I would have missed this beautiful sight.  My camera doesn't do much to capture the sight, but I can't help but keep shooting.

Jenn noticed. "Did you empty the upstairs bathroom trash? Thank you." I guess I've just been remembering how nice it is when someone does one of my "chores" for me.

Lesson learned: Sometimes when we do things we don't want, we unexpectedly get to experience things we would have missed out on.

When have you done for another and gotten/experienced something wonderfully unexpected in return?

Chicken Chat

What's in a name? That which we call a chicken....

So what do we call them? It depends on who you ask. Jenn has named one Liza Minnelli though I don't think she could tell you which one is Liza if you asked her. :) Avi calls them all "bawk bawk". I call them "Red One", "Yellow One", "Little One", and "Other One". I know they aren't the most creative names, but because I clean their shit, I think they will likely stick. Let me introduce you....
In the background is Other One and in the foreground is Little One.
For the record, Little One is also known as Liza.

Here is Yellow One.

And last but not least, Red One.

Credit where credit is due...
So all this time, I thought it was Red giving us our first eggs, but I discovered that it is actually Other One who is responsible!  She is laying one egg every to every other day. Avi loves to find the eggs in the nesting boxes (good girl, Other One, for laying there) and we are eating delicious healthy eggs at least every other day for breakfast.  Time to start looking up quiche recipes.

Here is Other One in front.
Behind her Red, Yellow, and way in the back is Liza... er... Little One.

Sweet Freedom
So the girls have plenty of space in their run, but last week with the warmer weather and the snow melting, I decided to open the gate to their run and let them reek havoc on the yard.  Their run is still mostly snow/ice covered and I wanted them to be able to scratch. What a joy it was to watch these girls scratch about the yard, dig up the mulch, 'bathe' in it, and just enjoy this new found freedom.

 Free at last.
Notice the colorful bunting that Jenn's sister Melissa sent to decorate our coop.

 My brood of five!

Scratch, dig, sit, bathe, repeat.
The girls had fun, but then we ran into a problem...

...remember this post from a few weeks back? Well, we still have this box of styrofoam peanuts in the living room, but those that you see on the floor were scooped up and bagged to take to the UPS store for recycling. But the bag spilled in the garage a little and some of the peanuts from the garage floor got carried away by the gale force winds we had here and scattered around the neighborhood. Ugh, right.  Even more ugh when I find that chickens LOVE styrofoam. They love EATING it! After I found them pecking at it and actually eating it, I scooped up as many as I could find and then went inside to google "my chickens ate styrofoam" and found that my girls aren't alone. Most of what I found were worried chicken keepers being consoled by other more experienced chicken keepers who said their birds did the same and they survived. When I returned outside to check in on the girls, Other One was under the fence and into the neighbor's yard pecking even more styrofoam. Again, I picked up what I could find and then scooted the girls back into their run. And just a few days before I was saying how keeping chickens is way easier than keeping dogs.

A little more fun before the styrofoam incident.

I loved how they ruffled their feathers and rolled on their backs in the mulch.

Red, loving the freedom!

9 things...

...for which I'm grateful (in no particular order).

Peace among the species.

Fruition.

Nature's morning majesty.

These helping hands.

Wintertime sunkissed clothes.

 A boy and his horse

The unexpected.

Nourishment.

Avi's big discoveries: like this diaper that doubles as a neck warmer.
